ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT) is a premier constituent institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), operating under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India. Established in 1924, the institute has a long-standing role in research, development, technology transfer, and skill development related to cotton and other natural fibres. Its headquarters is located at Matunga, Mumbai.

CIRCOT focuses on basic and strategic research in cotton processing, post-harvest technology, cotton agro-residues, development of value-added products, and quality assessment. The institute also supports India's cotton breeding and textile sectors through scientific research and technological expertise. Its research activities cover areas such as pre-ginning and ginning, mechanical processing, technical textiles and composites, characterization of cotton and other natural fibres, chemical and biochemical processing, biomass and by-product utilization, entrepreneurship, and human resource development.

The institute operates through specialized research divisions including the Mechanical Processing Division, Quality Evaluation and Improvement Division, Chemical and Biochemical Processing Division, and Technology Transfer Division. CIRCOT also maintains regional units across different parts of India and a Ginning Training Centre in Nagpur that provides training and technical support to professionals associated with the ginning industry.

In addition to research, CIRCOT provides several professional and technical services for industries, academic institutions, researchers, and farmers. These include testing and quality assessment, consultancy, calibration cotton standards, training programs, technology transfer, and agri-business incubation. Its Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF) provides access to advanced analytical equipment and supports research and development activities conducted by scientists, universities, laboratories, and industries.

CIRCOT also has an important educational and training role. The institute has been involved in cotton technology education and training for decades, and its scientists are recognized as co-guides for postgraduate and Ph.D. research at various universities and educational institutions. This creates opportunities for professionals and researchers to contribute to specialized areas of agricultural engineering, textile technology, natural fibres, and related scientific disciplines.

With its extensive research capabilities, specialized laboratories, educational activities, technical services, and focus on innovation, ICAR-CIRCOT provides a professional environment for researchers, scientists, educators, and other specialists interested in contributing to advances in cotton technology and agricultural research.
