The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) is a premier marine fisheries research institution under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Established on 3 February 1947, the institute has played a significant role in advancing marine fisheries research, resource management, mariculture, biodiversity conservation, and related scientific activities in India. Its headquarters are located in Kochi, Kerala.

ICAR-CMFRI conducts multidisciplinary research covering a wide range of areas associated with marine fisheries and coastal ecosystems. Its major research areas include fishery resource assessment, finfish fisheries, shellfish fisheries, mariculture, marine biotechnology, fish nutrition and health, marine biodiversity, and environmental management. The institute also works on understanding the effects of climate change and other environmental factors on marine resources and coastal communities.

One of the institute's important contributions is its work in monitoring and assessing India's marine fisheries resources. ICAR-CMFRI maintains extensive fisheries databases and has developed scientific methodologies for estimating marine fish landings and fishing effort across India's coastline. These research activities support scientific understanding of fisheries resources and contribute to sustainable fisheries management and planning.

The institute also focuses extensively on mariculture and aquaculture-related technologies. Its research has contributed to the development of hatchery and farming technologies for marine finfish, shrimp, oysters, mussels, clams, seaweeds, and other marine organisms. ICAR-CMFRI also undertakes research and technology development in marine biotechnology, biodiversity, ecosystem management, and marine environmental studies.

Education, training, technology transfer, and human resource development are also important parts of the institute's activities. Through its scientific programmes, specialized training, postgraduate education, extension activities, and research initiatives, ICAR-CMFRI provides opportunities for researchers, scientists, students, and other professionals to contribute to the development of India's marine fisheries sector.

With its extensive research infrastructure, multidisciplinary scientific expertise, and long-standing contribution to marine fisheries research, ICAR-CMFRI provides a professional environment for individuals interested in scientific research, teaching, education, fisheries science, marine biology, biotechnology, and related disciplines. The institute also publishes research and maintains scientific resources that support knowledge development in marine fisheries and associated fields.
