ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science (ICAR-IISS) is a premier research institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Established on 16 April 1988, the institute focuses on advancing scientific research in soil science and developing technologies that support sustainable soil management and agricultural productivity. Its core mission is to provide a scientific basis for enhancing and sustaining soil resource productivity while minimizing environmental degradation.

The institute conducts basic and strategic research covering the physical, chemical, and biological processes of soils, with particular attention to nutrient, water, and energy management. Its research and development activities contribute to important areas such as soil health management, conservation agriculture, carbon sequestration, soil microbial diversity, soil pollution and remediation, and climate-change-related agricultural challenges.

ICAR-IISS has made significant contributions to agricultural research and soil management technologies. Its work includes integrated nutrient management, GIS-based soil fertility mapping, soil testing, biofertilizers, enriched compost production, soil quality assessment, and technologies for improving nutrient-use efficiency. The institute has also developed tools and technologies such as the Mridaparikshak Mini Soil Lab for rapid soil testing and digital resources for assessing soil health and fertility.

The institute works closely with State Agricultural Universities, national and international research organizations, and other institutions involved in agricultural research. Through coordinated research projects and collaborative programs, ICAR-IISS contributes to strengthening India's agricultural research and education system. Its multidisciplinary research environment brings together scientists and technical professionals working across different dimensions of soil science and natural resource management.

ICAR-IISS also provides an academic and research-oriented environment for scientists, technical professionals, researchers, and other experts working in agricultural and environmental sciences. The institute's organizational structure includes scientific divisions supported by Principal Scientists, Senior Scientists, Scientists, coordinators, and administrative and technical teams. This creates opportunities for professionals interested in research, teaching, scientific innovation, and sustainable agriculture.

With its long-standing contribution to soil research, sustainable agriculture, environmental management, and natural resource conservation, ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science continues to play an important role in addressing emerging challenges related to soil health, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability in India.
