The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism is an autonomous research institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Its headquarters are in New Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. The institute studies the Earth's magnetic field and related processes in the solid Earth, atmosphere and near-Earth space. Its present research organisation dates from 1971, while its observational heritage reaches back to magnetic measurements at Colaba in the nineteenth century.
Long-running observations from Colaba and Alibag are an important part of that scientific identity. The institute combines theoretical analysis, experimental work and field observations rather than relying on a single method. Its activities include geomagnetism, geophysics, atmospheric science and space research. Instrument design and development support measurements, while data services make observational information useful to the wider scientific community. The World Data Centre for Geomagnetism at Mumbai is part of this research infrastructure.
IIG's formal responsibilities include maintaining and extending India's magnetic observatory network, acquiring reliable magnetic measurements and training researchers in geomagnetism and allied fields. It also develops magnetometers and provides relevant technical services, including magnetic-field surveys and compass calibration. Participation in polar expeditions connects its research with Arctic and Antarctic environments. Public outreach and the development of skilled scientific personnel form additional parts of the institute's mandate.
Regional laboratories and observatory locations give its work a geographical reach beyond the headquarters. Its published network includes centres at Colaba, Tirunelveli, Prayagraj and Shillong, alongside observatories in different parts of India. Research support therefore involves scientific instruments, field information, computing, documentation and administrative coordination as well as academic investigation. Employment opportunities can include research appointments, technical services, library work and administration. Each recruitment notice identifies the particular location, appointment route and eligibility conditions, including any deputation or reservation requirements that apply to individual posts.
