About Us

National Institute of Technology Meghalaya (NIT Meghalaya), located in Shillong, is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India and recognized as an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act, 2007. Founded in 2010, the institute has steadily grown into a reputed center for technical education and research in the North-Eastern region of India, with a focus on engineering, science, and technology. Though currently operating from a temporary campus at Laitumkhrah in Shillong, work is underway for the development of its permanent campus at Sohra (Cherrapunjee), which promises to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Academically, NIT Meghalaya offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across core engineering disciplines, sciences, and humanities. The B.Tech programs are available in Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, and Mechanical Engineering. At the postgraduate level, the institute provides M.Tech degrees in specialized engineering fields along with M.Sc programs in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. In addition, the institute has a growing Ph.D. program that emphasizes advanced research, innovation, and collaboration with industries and other academic institutions. Admissions to these programs are through national-level examinations such as JEE Main, GATE, JAM, and others.

Despite being a relatively young institute, NIT Meghalaya has quickly established a reputation for quality academics and active research culture. Faculty members are engaged in funded projects supported by government agencies like DST, SERB, and UGC. The institute also encourages student participation in research through projects, conferences, and technical festivals. A dedicated Training and Placement Cell ensures that students are well-prepared for professional careers, with companies from IT, core engineering, consultancy, and research sectors visiting the campus for recruitment.

NIT Meghalaya also emphasizes holistic development. It hosts cultural and technical festivals such as Cognitia and Shishir, which foster innovation, creativity, and teamwork. The institute provides facilities like well-equipped laboratories, digital classrooms, sports amenities, and residential hostels. Its location in Shillong offers a serene and scenic environment conducive to learning, while also exposing students to the unique culture of the North-East.
