We are St. Joseph’s University in Bengaluru, an institution with a history that began in 1882. Our origins are associated with the Fathers of the Paris Foreign Mission, and the Jesuits assumed responsibility for the institution in 1937. Over subsequent decades, our academic work expanded from college education into postgraduate study and research. Postgraduate programmes began in 1986, research activity developed from 1988, and autonomy was granted in 2005.
Our transition to a university followed the Karnataka legislation enacted in 2021. University status took effect in July 2022, with the formal inauguration held in September that year. This history connects a longstanding educational institution with a contemporary university structure. We are based on Lalbagh Road in Bengaluru, where our academic community brings together students and staff across several fields of study.
Our schools span business, chemical sciences, humanities and social sciences, languages and literatures, life sciences, physical sciences, social work, communication and media studies, and information technology. This range places scientific inquiry, professional education, cultural understanding and social engagement within a shared educational environment. Undergraduate and postgraduate learning is accompanied by opportunities for doctoral study and scholarly inquiry.
Our Jesuit educational tradition emphasises the development of the whole person. We value intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, integrity and a sense of responsibility towards society. Community engagement and service are part of that approach, encouraging students to connect academic learning with the experiences of people beyond the classroom. Our mission also recognises creativity, innovation and sustained inquiry as elements of university life. Through this combination of disciplinary education and social commitment, we aim to develop people capable of thoughtful participation in their professions and communities.
