Overview of The Lawrence School, Sanawar (Himachal Pradesh)

Founded on April 15, 1847 by Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence and his wife Honoria, The Lawrence School, Sanawar, is one of the oldest coeducational boarding schools in Asia. Nestled at an altitude of about 1,750 meters in the Kasauli Hills of Himachal Pradesh, the school spreads across 139 acres of pine and deodar forests, offering students a serene and inspiring environment for learning.

Initially established as an asylum for the orphans of British soldiers, Sanawar quickly rose in prominence for its academic rigor and military traditions. In 1920, it was renamed the “Lawrence Royal Military School” and became one of the very few institutions in the British Empire to be awarded the King’s Colours, a mark of exceptional distinction. Even today, the school proudly upholds its military heritage through ceremonial parades and the annual Founder's Day celebrations.

Academically, Sanawar follows the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum, offering classes from Grade 5 to Grade 12. Admissions typically begin in Class 5 and are based on a highly competitive entrance examination, followed by interviews. The school balances academics with a strong emphasis on co-curricular activities, ensuring holistic development.

The campus blends colonial-era architecture with modern facilities. Historic chapels, stone staircases, and cannons showcase its legacy, while the Parker Hall Learning Resource Centre, indoor solar-heated swimming pool, and expansive sports facilities reflect its progressive vision. The dining hall, capable of serving thousands daily, remains a central hub of campus life.

Sanawar is also a member of prestigious national and international organizations such as the Indian Public Schools’ Conference (IPSC), Round Square, and the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC, UK). Its students are encouraged to take part in adventure programs, leadership opportunities, and global exchanges.

In 2013, the school made history when a team of its students became the first school group in the world to climb Mount Everest, a feat that symbolizes the resilience and adventurous spirit of Sanawarians.

The alumni, known as Old Sanawarians, include leaders in politics, the armed forces, arts, cinema, sports, and business, adding to the institution’s illustrious reputation. Guided by its motto “Never Give In,” The Lawrence School, Sanawar continues to uphold a legacy of discipline, excellence, and global vision.
