We are Woodstock School, an international residential school near Mussoorie in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand. Established in 1854, we have a long history of bringing students from different backgrounds together in a shared learning community. Our educational identity combines an international outlook, an American heritage and a distinctive mountain setting. We are an IB World School and provide an academic experience in which inquiry, reflection and engagement with the wider world have a central place.
Our approach is student-centred and interdisciplinary. We encourage learners to connect ideas across subjects, investigate questions and develop the ability to communicate a reasoned understanding. The IB Diploma Programme provides a demanding senior-school pathway, supported by an emphasis on research integrity and independent work. We see the development of academic habits as inseparable from the judgement needed to use knowledge responsibly. Learning takes place through face-to-face interaction, digital resources and experiences outside the classroom.
Outdoor education is closely connected with our location. The surrounding Himalayan environment offers opportunities for exploration, challenge and a deeper understanding of nature. Our wilderness-education programme draws on the expertise of the Hanifl Centre, and Activity Week provides a sustained experience of learning beyond the normal timetable. These experiences ask students to make decisions, cooperate and reflect on their relationship with the environment and one another.
Our international community includes learners living in four residential properties. The relationship between dormitory life, academic work and outdoor experience gives students repeated opportunities to practise independence while remaining part of a supported community.
Residential life adds another dimension to education. Our dormitory properties and shared facilities provide settings in which students develop independence, routines and relationships across cultures. The school day extends beyond formal lessons into activities, community responsibilities and time spent living alongside others. We aim to help young people grow as thoughtful learners and considerate members of a diverse community. The combination of the IB pathway, residential life, outdoor education and our history since 1854 gives Woodstock its particular character.
