Explore librarian jobs in Chennai and compare opportunities by institution, campus location, qualifications and experience. Use the listings below to review school and academic-library roles when available. Open each job description to check the responsibilities, employment type, application instructions and any published salary before applying.
Looking for library jobs near you? Check the exact campus address and working hours, not just the Chennai location label. If you are starting your career, look for advertisements that explicitly accept freshers or offer library training.
A school librarian position and a senior academic-library appointment can involve very different work. Compare the full job description with your library qualifications, practical experience and preferred working environment before shortlisting a vacancy.
Library work can extend well beyond issuing books. For example, the American International School Chennai describes a library programme supporting reading, information literacy, classroom research and citations, with access to online databases and digital books. For a school-library application, prepare examples of how you have helped students find suitable resources or use information responsibly. This is a preparation suggestion based on AISC's published library programme, not a statement of its hiring requirements.
Do not treat Librarian, Assistant Librarian and Library Assistant as interchangeable titles. Read the qualifications and duties for the specific post. As a senior-role example, IIT Madras's April 2025 Librarian (Deputation) advertisement required a relevant master's degree, a PhD and substantial specified experience. That recruitment is historical, not an open vacancy. Its requirements should not be applied to every college or school job. See the IIT Madras 2025 advertisement, Annexure I (PDF).
Use this checklist to make your experience easy for an employer to assess:
A Chennai-wide search is only a starting point for finding a job near you. Institutions can operate several libraries: the University of Madras lists libraries at Chepauk, Guindy, Marina and Taramani. Confirm the work location for the actual vacancy, then assess your commute against the reporting time. Ask whether the appointment is permanent, fixed-term, part-time or a traineeship, and check any evening or weekend duties. These campus examples do not indicate current openings.
Check the exact library-science qualification, minimum marks, experience and any additional conditions in the advertisement. Degree names can differ: the University of Madras uses M.Lib.I.Sc for its Master of Library and Information Science. Do not assume that a BLIS, MLIS or similarly named qualification automatically meets every employer's criteria; ask the recruiting institution if equivalence is unclear.
Apply where the notice explicitly accepts freshers or your experience level. You can also search separately for Library Trainee and Library Assistant posts, but those titles do not guarantee entry-level eligibility. Highlight relevant internships and supervised practical work, and check whether the employer counts them towards its experience requirement.
Use the salary or pay scale in the individual advertisement; this page does not publish a city-wide salary estimate. If pay is not disclosed, ask the employer before proceeding. Clarify whether the quoted amount is monthly gross pay, annual compensation or a training stipend, and which benefits or deductions apply.
Follow the vacancy's requirements rather than assuming one system is mandatory everywhere. For example, AISC's library page identifies its catalogue as Oliver v5. On your CV, name the software you genuinely know and describe your work with records, lending or resource discovery. Ask about training if the employer uses an unfamiliar system.
Keep an updated CV, qualification records and relevant experience evidence ready. Follow the employer's document list rather than sending every document by default. As one local example, AISC's application guidance asks external applicants for a cover letter, resume and professional references. Get your referees' permission before sharing their contact details.
Open the full listing and check its deadline, application route and any closure notice. Where an official employer advertisement exists, compare it with the listing and check for updates. If no deadline is given or the post is old, contact the institution through its official website before preparing a detailed application.
